More about Constanta...

        Constanta is the oldest city in Romania. The first document dates from 657 BC the current place peninsula (and even under water today, opposite the Casino) formed a Greek colony called Tomis. The settlement was conquered by the Romans in 71 BC and renamed Constantiana after sister of Constantine the Great. In the XIIIth century Great Sea (the Black Sea as it was called then) was dominated by Italian merchants from Genoa who helped develop the city.

        Subsequently, Constanta declined under Ottoman rule and became a simple village of fishermen and farmers Greek Tatar horses and sheep. After the War of Independence (1877-1878) when Dobrogea became part of Romanian Kingdom, Constanta, the main port of the state, has increased continuously, and held that role until today.

 

Constanta harbor covers an area of ​​39.26 km ², has a length of about 30 km, is the largest port in the Black Sea and is the 4th in Europe.
